Ingredients

For the DIY Winter Sensory Jar
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 2 tbsp clear glue or glycerin for a slower-moving snowfall effect
  • 2-3 tbsp Epsom salt or white glitter for the snow effect
  • winter-themed decorations such as faux snowflakes, miniature trees, or suitable seasonal decorations
  • food coloring or liquid watercolor optional
  • small gemstones or beads optional; use only with close supervision because small objects can present a choking hazard

Equipment

  • Glass Jar with Secure Lid
  • Spoon for Stirring
  • Bowl or Measuring Container

Method

  1. Step 1: Wash and dry the glass jar thoroughly. Make sure the container and lid are clean, dry, and free of residue.
  2. Step 2: Combine approximately 1 cup of distilled water with 2 tablespoons of clear glue or glycerin in a bowl or measuring container. Stir slowly until well combined.
  3. Step 3: Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt or white glitter to create the snowfall effect. Stir gently and adjust the amount according to the desired appearance.
  4. Step 4: Carefully place winter-themed decorations inside the clean jar. Arrange them so they have enough room to move naturally without becoming stuck together.
  5. Step 5: Add a few drops of food coloring or liquid watercolor if desired. Use a small amount at first and add more gradually until you achieve the desired color.
  6. Step 6: Carefully pour the prepared liquid into the jar, leaving a small amount of space at the top. Wipe the rim clean and secure the lid tightly. Check for leaks before use.
  7. Step 7: Gently shake the sealed jar and watch the sparkling particles swirl through the winter scene. Set it down and observe as the snow slowly settles.

Notes

Distilled water is preferred for a clearer finished jar, although regular water can be used if necessary. Glycerin can replace clear glue to slow the movement of the contents. Customize the jar with different colors, seasonal decorations, glitter combinations, and container sizes. Always supervise young children and securely seal the jar before sensory play. Avoid loose small objects when working with children who may put items in their mouths.
