Ingredients

  • Blue Crayons Any shade of blue will do! Feel free to mix and match for a unique look.
  • Waxed Paper This is the magic ingredient that holds it all together.
  • Embroidery Floss or String For hanging your finished suncatchers. Choose a color that complements your blue!

Equipment

  • Sharpener
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Pencil or Pen

Method

  1. First things first, let's gather all our goodies: blue crayons, waxed paper, and your embroidery floss or string.
  2. Now, it’s time to prepare our crayons. Carefully peel the paper wrappers off your blue crayons.
  3. Next, grab your sharpener and start creating those beautiful blue crayon shavings. The finer the shavings, the more even your melted color will be. I like to use a variety of blues for a richer effect.
  4. Lay out one sheet of waxed paper on a clean surface. Spread your blue crayon shavings evenly across about half of the sheet. Don't worry if it’s not perfect; we'll even it out.
  5. Take a second sheet of waxed paper and place it directly on top of the shavings, creating a little crayon sandwich.
  6. Here’s where the magic happens! With an adult’s help and supervision, carefully iron the waxed paper. Set your iron to the lowest setting and move it quickly over the paper for about 10-15 seconds. You want the shavings to melt together, not burn. Keep the iron moving!
  7. Once melted, let the waxed paper cool down completely. It will become hard and slightly stiff, ready for the next step.
  8. Grab your pencil or pen and draw some lovely raindrop shapes onto the hardened wax. You can get creative with other shapes too – circles, stars, or even simple blobs!
  9. Carefully cut out your drawn shapes using your scissors. Take your time to get clean edges.
  10. To hang your beautiful suncatchers, punch a small hole at the top of each raindrop shape.
  11. Now, thread your embroidery floss or string through each hole. Tie a knot at the end to secure it.
  12. Finally, hang your finished Blue Suncatchers near a window and watch them fill your room with a beautiful blue glow! These look wonderful alongside other colorful crafts, like my DIY Bioplastic Suncatchers for an extra pop of homemade charm.

Notes

Want to mix things up or add your own personal flair? Here are a few ideas:
  • Color Play: Don't limit yourself to just blue! Try other colors, or even mix shavings from different colored crayons for a marbled effect. You could even try making some festive Electric Blue Candy Pineapple inspired suncatchers!
  • Glitter: For extra sparkle, sprinkle a little fine glitter over the crayon shavings before adding the second sheet of waxed paper.
  • Shape Variety: Beyond raindrops, consider cutting out leaf shapes, hearts, or even simple geometric patterns.
  • String Variations: Instead of embroidery floss, try twine, yarn, or even colorful ribbons.
A few little tricks can make your suncatcher-making even more enjoyable:
  • Adult Supervision is Key: Always have an adult handle the ironing part.
  • Crayon Shaving Size: Smaller shavings melt more evenly, leading to a smoother finish.
  • Iron Setting: Start low and slow. If the wax isn't melting, you can increase the heat slightly, but be careful not to scorch the paper.
  • Cool Completely: Make sure the waxed paper is fully cool and hardened before cutting. This prevents the shapes from distorting.
  • Prep Ahead: You can peel and shave the crayons in advance, making the actual crafting process even quicker.
