Method
- Step 1: Grab your electric mixer and a large bowl. Beat the softened butter and confectioners' sugar together until the mixture is light, fluffy, and smooth. This is where the magic starts!
- Step 2: Now, it’s time to add the egg and vanilla extract to the creamy butter mixture. Beat them in until everything is well combined.
- Step 3: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. This ensures everything is evenly distributed.
- Step 4: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in the large bowl. Mix until it just comes together into a cohesive dough. Be careful not to overmix – we want tender cookies!
- Step 5: Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and pop it into the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. This chilling step is super important for making the dough easy to handle and preventing your cookies from spreading too much.
- Step 6: Once chilled, take the dough out of the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for a bit until it’s pliable enough to roll. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Step 7: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Aim for an even thickness so your cookies bake uniformly.
- Step 8: Now for the fun part! Use your favorite cookie cutters to create all sorts of shapes. Think stars, hearts, gingerbread men, or even festive holiday shapes!
- Step 9: Carefully place your cut-out cookies onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Leave a little space between them, as they might spread just a tiny bit.
- Step 10: Bake the cookies for 8 to 12 minutes. You’re looking for them to be firm in the center but not browned. We want that lovely pale cookie that’s ready for decorating!
- Step 11: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before gently transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Patience is key here – warm cookies can break easily!
