- Step 1: Craft Your PattiesFirst things first, let's get our Salisbury steak patties ready. In a medium bowl, grab all the ingredients for the steak – ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, panko, egg, Worcestershire sauce, mayo, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, ketchup, milk, and Dijon mustard. Get your hands in there and mix it all up until it’s just combined. Don't overmix, or your patties might get tough! Now, divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into oval or round patties. To make sure they cook evenly, gently press a small indentation in the center of each patty. This little trick prevents them from puffing up like little burgers!
- Step 2: Sear Those SteaksHeat the olive oil in a large, non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully place your patties in the skillet. Let them sizzle and cook until they're beautifully golden brown on both sides and cooked all the way through. This usually takes about 4-5 minutes per side, depending on their thickness. Once they’re perfectly cooked, remove them from the skillet and set them aside on a plate. Keep them warm while we whip up that amazing gravy!
- Step 3: Build the Flavor Base for GravyUsing the same skillet (less cleanup is always a win!), add the finely diced yellow onion. Sauté them until they start to soften and turn translucent, scraping up any tasty browned bits left from the steaks. Now, toss in your minced garlic and the butter. Stir them around for about a minute until they're fragrant. The aroma is already amazing, right?
- Step 4: Mushroom Magic!Add your sliced mushrooms to the skillet. Let them cook, stirring occasionally, until they’re nice and browned. This brings out their delicious, earthy flavor. Give them a little sprinkle of salt and pepper as they cook. Mushrooms really do transform when they get a good sauté!
- Step 5: Whisk Up the Gravy GoodnessIn a separate bowl, let’s get our gravy base ready. Whisk together the all-purpose flour, beef broth, water, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, ketchup, salt, and pepper. Make sure there are no lumps of flour – a smooth start is key to a smooth gravy.
- Step 6: Thicken and SimmerPour that luscious gravy mixture into the skillet with the sautéed onions and mushrooms. Stir everything together and let it cook, stirring occasionally, until the gravy starts to thicken to your desired consistency. This usually takes just a few minutes. It’s going to smell incredible!
- Step 7: Bring it All TogetherNow for the grand finale! Gently return your perfectly cooked Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into that rich mushroom gravy. Spoon plenty of that velvety gravy over the top of each patty, making sure they're well-covered and bathing in deliciousness. Let them simmer in the gravy for a few more minutes, just enough to heat through and absorb all those wonderful flavors. And there you have it – your very own homemade Salisbury steak, ready to be devoured!
