Ingredients

For the Rolls
  • 2.25 tsp yeast active dry yeast
  • 1.25 cups warm milk around 110°F (43°C)
  • 0.25 cup honey for dough sweetness and moisture
  • 4 tbsp melted butter for richness in dough, plus more for brushing
  • 1 egg adds structure and golden color
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour more as needed for dough consistency
For the Cinnamon Honey Butter
  • 0.5 cup softened butter 1 stick
  • 0.5 cup honey
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Kitchen Towel or Plastic Wrap

Method

  1. Step 1: Activate the yeast by stirring together yeast, warm milk, and honey in a large bowl. Let sit until frothy, about 5–10 minutes.
  2. Step 2: Add melted butter, egg, and flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until dough comes together, soft but not sticky. Add more flour if needed.
  3. Step 3: Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 60–90 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out to about ½-inch thickness and cut into 2x2 inch squares. Place squares on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced apart.
  5. Step 5: Bake rolls in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes until golden brown on top.
  6. Step 6: Brush hot rolls generously with melted butter for a shiny, flavorful finish. Serve warm.
  7. Step 7: For the cinnamon honey butter, beat softened butter, honey, powdered sugar, and cinnamon together until fluffy. Chill if desired before serving.

Notes

Make rolls dairy-free by substituting almond or oat milk. Swap honey for maple syrup for a different sweetness. Add shredded cheddar or herbs on top before baking for a fun twist. Store rolls in an airtight container at room temperature up to 2 days or freeze up to 3 months.
