- Step 1: Get the Crackers Ready. Carefully place your crackers into a large, sturdy resealable bag (like a gallon-sized freezer bag). Pour the ¾ cup of olive oil evenly over the crackers. Gently toss the bag, rolling it around and tipping it carefully, to coat the crackers as evenly as possible with the oil. Avoid aggressive shaking.
- Step 2: Add the Flavor Power. Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning and the 3 tablespoons of chili flakes right into the bag over the oiled crackers. Seal the bag tightly. Flip, turn, and gently massage the bag repeatedly for a minute or two until everything looks well coated.
- Step 3: Let the Magic Happen Overnight. Find a spot on your counter or in your pantry and lay the bag flat. Let it sit at room temperature overnight, or for at least 8-12 hours. This resting time allows the oil and spices to soak into the crackers. Every few hours, give the bag another gentle flip or turn to ensure all the crackers get equal attention from the marinade.
Notes
Substitutions & Additions: You can use vegetable, canola, or other neutral oils. For a different profile, add dry ranch seasoning mix (skip Italian seasoning). Adjust chili flakes to your heat preference (1 tbsp for milder, 4-5 tbsp for hotter). Add garlic powder and/or onion powder for more savory flavor. Try oyster crackers or plain pretzels instead of saltines or Ritz.
Tips for Success: Be gentle when handling the crackers to avoid crushing. Do not skip the overnight soaking time; flipping the bag occasionally helps distribute flavor. Use a bag large enough to comfortably hold and toss the crackers.
Storage: Transfer cooled firecrackers to an airtight container. Store at room temperature for 1-2 weeks. Refrigeration is not necessary and may affect crispness.
