- Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
- Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Step 3: In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Step 4: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined. If desired, fold in chocolate chips or nuts.
- Step 5: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Step 6: Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
