Method
- Step 1: Start by pouring your chosen hand lotion or hair conditioner into a medium-sized mixing bowl.
- Step 2: Next, add a few drops of your favorite food coloring. Start with just a few drops; you can always add more if you want a more intense color.
- Step 3: Gently blend the lotion or conditioner and the food coloring together. Use a spoon or a small whisk until the color is nice and uniform throughout. It’s like magic starting to happen!
- Step 4: Now, it's time for the cornstarch! Gradually sprinkle in the 1 1/4 cups of cornstarch while stirring continuously. Keep mixing until it’s all incorporated.
- Step 5: Once the mixture starts to come together and looks like dough, it's time to get your hands in there! Knead the dough with your hands right in the bowl or on a clean surface until it’s smooth and wonderfully pliable. It should feel soft and not sticky.
- Step 6: If you find your dough is a little too sticky, don't worry! Just add a tiny bit more cornstarch, a tablespoon at a time, and knead it in until you achieve that perfect, non-sticky consistency.
Notes
Want to jazz up your play dough? You've got options!
- Scent: Add a drop or two of essential oils (like lavender for calm or peppermint for focus) to the lotion before adding the cornstarch.
- Sparkle: Mix in some glitter for a dazzling effect! Edible glitter is a great option if little ones might be tempted to taste it.
- Texture: For a slightly different feel, you could try using a bit of flour mixed with the cornstarch, but cornstarch alone usually gives the best results.

- Don't Overmix Initially: While you want to incorporate the cornstarch, avoid over-kneading when the dough is still very wet, as this can make it tough.
- Start with Less Cornstarch: It's always easier to add more cornstarch if the dough is too sticky than to fix dough that’s too dry and crumbly.
- Clean Hands: Make sure your hands are clean before you start kneading to keep the dough free of dirt and oils.
- Temperature Matters: If your lotion or conditioner is very cold, the dough might seem a bit stiff at first. Just keep kneading; your hands will warm it up.
- If you're planning a play date, you can even prepare portions of the dough ahead of time! It’s a great activity to have ready, much like our popular sweet potato cheesecake cookies which are always a hit.
