Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 2 cans deluxe cinnamon rolls 17.5 ounces each, with icing included; quartered
  • 2 cans apple pie filling 21 ounces each
  • 0.5 cup caramel sauce plus extra for drizzling
  • 1 box spice cake mix 15.25 ounces
  • 0.75 cup salted butter cold, thinly sliced

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch Baking Dish
  • Cooking spray
  • Wire rack
  • Microwave (optional)

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C). Spray a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Step 2: Open the cans of apple pie filling and spread the filling out in an even layer across the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  3. Step 3: Quarter the cinnamon rolls (cut each roll into four pieces) and scatter them evenly over the apple filling.
  4. Step 4: Drizzle the half a cup of caramel sauce right over the scattered cinnamon roll pieces.
  5. Step 5: Sprinkle the dry spice cake mix evenly over the entire surface of the dish, trying to get it into all the nooks and crannies.
  6. Step 6: Arrange the thin slices of cold, salted butter over the top of the dry cake mix, trying to cover as much of the surface area as possible.
  7. Step 7: Pop the dish into your preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Step 8: Carefully take it out of the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes to allow it to set up slightly.
  9. Step 9: While it's cooling slightly, warm the reserved icing from the cinnamon rolls gently in the microwave if needed to make it drizzle-able. Drizzle this warm icing generously over the still-warm cake, then add a little extra caramel sauce drizzle over the top.
  10. Step 10: Serve it warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Substitutions: Try cherry, peach, or mixed berry pie filling. Use yellow, vanilla, or butter pecan cake mix. Add chopped pecans or walnuts over the butter. Add 1 tsp ground cinnamon or apple pie spice to the cake mix. Sprinkle white chocolate or butterscotch chips over the top before baking.
Tips: Do NOT stir the layers. Ensure butter slices cover as much of the dry cake mix as possible for proper baking. Watch the edges for bubbling and the top for golden brown color.
Prep Ahead: You can assemble the cake (minus the butter) and store it covered in the fridge for a few hours before adding butter slices and baking. Not recommended to assemble completely the day before.
Storage: Let cool completely, then cover tightly. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave or the dish loosely covered in a 300°F oven.
