Ingredients

  • 1 cup soy wax flakes or beeswax Choose wicks that are appropriate for the size of your containers.
  • Candle wicks (cotton or wooden)
  • 20-30 drops essential oils Citronella, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, and rosemary are good options.
  • dried herbs (e.g., lavender, rosemary, lemon balm) optional, for added beauty and scent

Equipment

  • Double boiler or heat-safe glass bowl over a saucepan
  • Heat-safe containers (e.g., mason jars, tins, teacups)
  • Wick holders or clothespins

Method

  1. Step 1: Melt the Wax: Set up a double boiler or a heat-safe glass bowl over simmering water. Add wax flakes/beeswax to the top pot and heat gently, stirring occasionally until fully liquefied.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Containers: Place one candle wick in the center of each heat-safe container. Use a wick holder or clothespins to keep the wick upright and centered.
  3. Step 3: Add Essential Oils: Once the wax is melted, remove it from heat and let it cool slightly (around 130–140°F). Stir in the essential oils thoroughly.
  4. Step 4: Pour the Wax: Carefully pour the scented wax mixture into the prepared containers. If using, gently sprinkle in dried herbs. Let the candles cool undisturbed for several hours, ideally overnight, until completely set.
  5. Step 5: Trim & Use: Trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch. Light the candles and enjoy your bug-free outdoor space!

Notes

For a different scent, try mixing essential oils like citronella with peppermint, or lavender with rosemary. You can also add candle dye chips for color, ensuring they are safe for use with essential oils. Make sure your wick is centered for even burning.
