Course: Craft

Ingredients

For the Sun Catcher
  • 1 sheet colored art page or coloring page
  • 1 mason jar lid flat, circular part
  • 1 wide mouth mason jar band optional
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or cooking oil for oiling paper
  • 1 cotton ball for applying oil
  • 1 paper towel for blotting
  • 1 craft glue e.g., Aleene's Tacky Glue
  • 1 foot twine for hanging

Equipment

  • Mason jar lids
  • Mason jar bands (optional)
  • Cotton balls
  • Scissors
  • Paper towel

Method

  1. Step 1: Dip a cotton ball into the oil and gently coat the colored art page evenly. Blot away excess oil with a paper towel and let it sit for 5 minutes to become translucent.
  2. Step 2: Place a mason jar lid on the oiled paper and trace around its inside with a pencil. Carefully cut out the traced circle.
  3. Step 3: Apply a thin layer of glue to the inside rim of the mason jar lid. Place the cut-out paper circle into the lid, colored side facing out.
  4. Step 4: Wrap twine around the outer rim of the lid, tie a knot, and leave about 4 inches for hanging, tying another knot at the top. Optionally, glue the lid into a mason jar band before adding the twine.

Notes

Experiment with different paper types like tissue paper for a softer look or add glitter and embellishments for extra flair. Mason jar bands can be painted for a decorative frame.
