Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water To help create our paste.
  • Various colors food coloring For that vibrant, magical look.
  • ice cube tray or silicone mold Whatever shape you fancy!
  • vinegar The secret ingredient for the fizz!
  • small bowls or cups For dividing and coloring the paste.
  • droppers, pipettes, or spoons For applying the vinegar.

Equipment

  • Ice cube tray or silicone mold
  • Small bowls or cups
  • Droppers, pipettes, or spoons
  • Freezer
  • Airtight container or freezer-safe bag

Method

  1. Step 1: Mix the Base: In a big bowl, grab your 1 cup of baking soda and pour in the 1/2 cup of water. Give it a good stir until you have a nice, thick paste. Think of it like making a simple dough.
  2. Step 2: Divide and Conquer: Now, take that paste and divide it up into as many small bowls or cups as you have colors you want to make.
  3. Step 3: Add Some Color: To each bowl, add a few drops of a different food coloring. Gently mix each one until the color is evenly distributed. You'll have a beautiful array of colored pastes!
  4. Step 4: Fill Your Molds: Carefully spoon your colored baking soda mixtures into your ice cube tray or silicone mold. Fill each little compartment about three-quarters of the way full. Don't overfill, or they might spread out too much.
  5. Step 5: Freeze Away: Pop the tray into the freezer for at least 2 hours, or until the cubes are completely solid. Patience, young scientist!
  6. Step 6: Unmold the Magic: Once they're frozen solid, carefully pop the colorful ice cubes out of the tray. They should slide out easily. If they're a bit stubborn, a gentle twist of the tray can help.
  7. Step 7: Set the Stage: Arrange your beautiful, frozen fizzing cubes in a shallow dish or tray. This will help catch any drips.
  8. Step 8: Prepare the Fizz: Pour some vinegar into small, separate bowls.
  9. Step 9: Let the Fun Begin!: Grab your droppers, pipettes, or even just small spoons. Let everyone have a turn! Drip the vinegar onto the fizzing ice cubes and watch the amazing bubbly reaction! It's like tiny volcanoes erupting right before your eyes.

Notes

Experiment with shapes, add edible glitter for sparkle, or incorporate kid-safe essential oils for scent. You can also try lemon juice instead of vinegar for a zesty reaction.
