Servings: 1 firefly
Course: Craft

Ingredients

  • Empty water bottle Clean and dry
  • Black and white pipe cleaners For antennae
  • Black, red, and brown construction paper For eyes, wings, legs, and band
  • 1 glow stick For the glow
  • Tape For assembly
  • Glue For details

Equipment

  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife (optional, for adult use)
  • Pencil

Method

  1. Cut out two large black circles for eyes and smaller brown circles for pupils from construction paper. Glue the brown circles onto the black circles.
  2. Cut four wing shapes from black construction paper. Ovals or butterfly shapes work well.
  3. Cut a thin strip from red construction paper to use as a band around the firefly's body.
  4. Twist black and white pipe cleaners together to create antennae.
  5. Use tape to attach the four wings to the back of the water bottle, spacing them evenly.
  6. Cut six thin strips from black construction paper for legs. Tape three strips to each side of the water bottle, letting them dangle.
  7. Wrap the red paper strip around the front of the water bottle, near where the wings are attached.
  8. Glue the decorated eyes to the top of the bottle, near the cap. Glue the antennae next to the eyes.
  9. Activate the glow stick by bending it. Carefully insert the activated glow stick through the opening at the top of the bottle so it rests at the bottom.

Notes

For a different texture, try using tissue paper or fabric scraps for the wings. Googly eyes can be used instead of paper eyes. Add glitter glue to the wings or antennae for extra sparkle. Feel free to add more or fewer legs. Experiment with different colors for a unique firefly!
