Ingredients

  • Old Crayons The more colors, the merrier! This is the perfect excuse to finally use up those broken pieces.
  • Wax Paper This is our magic ingredient that holds everything together and gives it that beautiful translucent quality.
  • Parchment Paper To protect your baking tray and make cleanup a breeze.

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking tray
  • Wax Paper
  • Parchment paper
  • Scissors
  • Toothpick or Skewer (optional)

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C).
  2. Step 2: Remove paper wrappers from crayons and break them into small, uniform pieces. Sort colors if desired.
  3. Step 3: Lay a sheet of wax paper flat on a baking tray. Cover the tray well.
  4. Step 4: Arrange crayon pieces on the wax paper in a star shape. Consider color combinations.
  5. Step 5: Place another sheet of wax paper over the crayon arrangement to create a sandwich.
  6. Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 5-10 minutes, or until crayons are melted and fused. Monitor closely to avoid over-melting.
  7. Step 7: Carefully remove the tray from the oven and let it cool completely until it's cool to the touch.
  8. Step 8: Gently peel off the top layer of wax paper to reveal the melted crayon shape.
  9. Step 9: Using scissors, carefully cut out the star shapes from the cooled wax paper, following the crayon outline.
  10. Step 10: Hang the sun catchers in a sunny window and enjoy the colorful light patterns.

Notes

For extra sparkle, sprinkle fine glitter over the crayon pieces before adding the second layer of wax paper. Poke a small hole at the top with a toothpick before the crayon completely cools to make hanging easier.
