Total Time 1 hour 12 minutes

Ingredients

  • Used CDs or DVDs The base of our suncatchers! Any old discs will do.
  • N/A N/A Non-toxic school glue The clear kind works best for a translucent look, but white glue is fine too!
  • N/A N/A Liquid watercolors or food dye This is where the magic happens, giving your suncatchers their vibrant colors.
  • N/A N/A Swabs or wooden stir sticks Perfect for swirling and mixing those beautiful colors into the glue.
  • N/A N/A Yarn or pipe cleaners To create a loop for hanging your finished suncatchers.
Optional Additions
  • N/A N/A Fine glitter For an extra sparkly effect.
  • N/A N/A Small beads For texture.

Equipment

  • Craft mat or newspaper
  • Trays for drying
  • Hole punch, drill bit, or needle
  • Pinterest

Method

  1. Step 1: Place a used CD or DVD, shiny-side up, on your workspace. Lay down some newspaper or a craft mat to protect your surface.
  2. Step 2: Pour a small amount of non-toxic school glue onto the surface of the CD, just enough to cover the center nicely.
  3. Step 3: Dip swabs or wooden stir sticks into liquid watercolors or food dye. Gently swirl and mix the colors into the glue on the CD. Get creative with your color combinations!
  4. Step 4: Carefully place your decorated CDs on trays. Let them dry completely, which can take about 2–3 days. They need to be fully hardened before the next step.
  5. Step 5: Once your suncatchers are totally dry, carefully punch a hole at the top of each CD. A hole punch, a small drill bit, or a sturdy needle can be used.
  6. Step 6: Thread a piece of yarn or a pipe cleaner through the hole. Tie a knot at the end to create a secure loop for hanging.

Notes

Feel free to sprinkle fine glitter onto the wet glue before it dries for an extra sparkly effect. You could also try layering different colors of glue or adding small beads into the wet glue for texture.
