Ingredients

Bioplastic Mixture
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • various drops food coloring
Optional Decorations
  • fine glitter for extra sparkle
  • small, flat natural elements like dried flower petals or tiny leaves

Equipment

  • Pot
  • Spoon or craft stick
  • Clear plastic sheet or wax paper
  • Bowls (for colors)
  • Paintbrush (optional)

Method

  1. Step 1: Mix It Up: In your pot, combine the cornstarch, water, and white vinegar. Stir until well mixed.
  2. Step 2: Thicken the Magic: Place the pot over medium heat. Stir constantly for 5-10 minutes until the mixture thickens into a gel-like consistency.
  3. Step 3: Color Your World: Remove the pot from heat. Divide the gel into separate bowls for each color. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and stir until evenly distributed.
  4. Step 4: Shape Your Sunshine: Lay out your clear plastic sheet or wax paper. Gently spoon the colored mixtures onto the sheet, spreading them into thin layers or creating swirls and shapes.
  5. Step 5: The Waiting Game: Let the suncatchers dry completely on the sheet. This typically takes about 24 hours. They will harden and become more transparent.
  6. Step 6: Get Fancy (Optional): Once completely dry, you can add extra details with paint or glitter.
  7. Step 7: Hang and Enjoy: Hang your finished suncatchers in windows using suction cups or string. Watch them catch the sunlight!

Notes

For best results, ensure the mixture is stirred constantly while heating and that the suncatchers are completely dry before handling. If the bioplastic mixture becomes too firm, it can be gently reheated. Store finished suncatchers flat in a container to prevent them from sticking or getting damaged.
