DIY Bioplastic Suncatchers

Create stunning, nature-inspired suncatchers using gelatin and collected natural elements. A fast, easy, and magical craft for all ages!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 part Gelatin powder (unflavored)
  • 4 parts Boiling water
  • String or yarn for hanging
  • Natural loose parts petals, leaves, twigs, pine needles etc.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Silicone molds or muffin tins

Method
 

  1. Collect your nature treasures from the garden, looking for colorful and interesting shapes.
  2. Design your suncatcher by arranging natural materials in your molds.
  3. Mix 1 part unflavored gelatin powder with 4 parts boiling water in a mixing bowl.
  4. Whisk the mixture until the gelatin powder is completely dissolved and you have a smooth, clear liquid.
  5. Carefully pour the gelatin mixture into your molds, ensuring the natural decorations are fully submerged.
  6. Gently insert a piece of string or yarn into each mold for hanging, ensuring it's well-embedded.
  7. Place the molds in a cool, undisturbed area for 24 to 48 hours to fully harden.
  8. Once firm, carefully remove your suncatchers from their molds. If sticky, let them air dry for a few more hours.
  9. Hang your finished bioplastic suncatchers in a sunny window and enjoy the magical display of light!

Notes

For added sparkle, a tiny pinch of biodegradable glitter can be used. A drop of natural food coloring can also tint the gelatin. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
