Ingredients

  • Unflavored gelatin powder
  • 1 part gelatin powder for mixing with water
  • 4 parts boiling water for mixing with gelatin
  • Natural loose parts leaves, flower petals, small twigs, herbs, pinecones
  • String or yarn for hanging loop

Equipment

  • Plastic lids (yogurt or butter tubs)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Towel or tray for drying
  • Light board or another tray (optional)

Method

  1. Step 1: Gather your natural treasures! Collect leaves with interesting shapes and veins, colorful flower petals, sturdy twigs, or fragrant herbs.
  2. Step 2: Design your masterpiece. Lay out your plastic lids and arrange your collected natural elements inside each lid, playing with different designs and patterns.
  3. Step 3: Mix the bioplastic base. In a mixing bowl, combine unflavored gelatin powder with boiling water (1 part gelatin to 4 parts boiling water). Stir gently until dissolved.
  4. Step 4: Pour and cover. Carefully pour a thin layer of the warm gelatin mixture over the natural items in each lid, ensuring they are nicely covered.
  5. Step 5: Add the hanging loop. While the gelatin is still warm, press one end of a string or yarn into the edge of the gelatin and fold the loop over to rest on top.
  6. Step 6: Let the magic dry. Place the lids on a towel or tray and let them dry at room temperature for 1–2 days. You can place a light board or another tray on top to help them dry flat.
  7. Step 7: Admire your creation! Once dry and firm, carefully peel the suncatchers out of the lids and hang them in a sunny window.

Notes

For edible suncatchers, explore agar-agar or pectin. Add eco-friendly glitter or a drop of natural food coloring for extra sparkle or color. Use pre-pressed flowers for a delicate look.
