Ingredients

  • Gelatin powder (plain, unflavored)
  • 1 part boiling water for dissolving gelatin
  • 1/4 cup gelatin powder (example ratio for water)
  • 1 cup boiling water (example ratio for gelatin)
  • Loose natural materials (dried leaves, flower petals, twigs, grass) dry
  • String or yarn optional, for hanging loop
  • Food coloring optional, for color boost
  • Biodegradable glitter optional, for sparkle

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Molds (muffin tins, silicone molds, bowls, jars)
  • Parchment paper (if using cookie cutters)

Method

  1. Step 1: Gather your nature treasures: Collect dry, colorful, and textured natural materials like leaves, petals, or twigs.
  2. Step 2: Arrange your designs: Place the natural materials inside your chosen molds, creating patterns or letting them fall naturally.
  3. Step 3: Mix the gelatin magic: In a mixing bowl, combine 1 part gelatin powder with 4 parts boiling water (e.g., 1/4 cup gelatin powder to 1 cup boiling water).
  4. Step 4: Dissolve and stir: Stir the gelatin mixture gently until the powder is completely dissolved, creating a clear, smooth liquid.
  5. Step 5: Pour with care: Carefully pour the dissolved gelatin mixture over the arranged natural materials in the molds, ensuring everything is evenly covered.
  6. Step 6: Add a hanging loop (Optional): Fold a piece of string or yarn into a loop and gently submerge the folded end into the gelatin mixture in the mold.
  7. Step 7: Patience is a virtue: Let the molds sit undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours for the gelatin to fully harden and become firm. You can leave them at room temperature or refrigerate if it's warm.
  8. Step 8: Gently unmold: Once completely firm, carefully pop the suncatchers out of their molds.
  9. Step 9: Find the perfect sunny spot: Hang your finished suncatchers in a window to enjoy the colorful light they cast!

Notes

Ensure all natural materials are completely dry. Don't overcrowd the molds for even setting. If a suncatcher feels sticky, it needs more drying time. Clean up spills quickly while wet.
