- Step 1: Grab a medium-sized mixing bowl. Pour in your baking soda and cornstarch. Give them a good whisk together until they’re nicely combined. This ensures an even texture.
- Step 2: If you’re using food coloring or mica powder, now’s the time to stir it into the dry mixture. This helps distribute the color evenly before you add any moisture. A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount and add more if you want a deeper hue.
- Step 3: Now, you'll gradually add the water. Start with about 1/3 cup and stir. You’re aiming for a consistency that’s like a thick, pliable dough – similar to playdough or cookie dough that’s not too sticky. If it’s too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until you reach the perfect texture. You want it to hold its shape without crumbling.
- Step 4: Time for those lovely essential oils! Drip your chosen oils into the dough. Then, gently knead the dough for a minute or two. This helps to really distribute the scent throughout the stones. You’ll start to notice that wonderful aroma filling your kitchen!
- Step 5: Now for the fun part – shaping! Press the dough firmly into your silicone molds. If you’re using cookie cutters, flatten the dough on a clean surface and press the cutters in. Smooth out any rough edges or tops so they look nice and neat. For cookie cutters, I like to gently lift the excess dough away.
- Step 6: Find a nice, dry spot to let your creations air dry. This usually takes about 24 to 48 hours, depending on the humidity in your home. You’ll know they’re ready when they feel completely hard and dry to the touch. Resist the urge to touch them too much while they’re drying!
- Step 7: Once they're totally dry, carefully pop them out of the molds or off your cutters. Store them in an airtight container or little mesh sachets to keep them fresh. If the scent starts to fade after a while, you can simply add a few more drops of essential oil and let them reabsorb the fragrance. It's like giving them a little scent boost!
Notes
Add dried flowers, herbs, biodegradable glitter, or citrus zest for visual appeal and extra fragrance. Experiment with different essential oil blends like eucalyptus and peppermint for a spa-like scent, or cinnamon and clove for a warm aroma.
