- In your mixing bowl, combine the baking soda and cornstarch. Give them a good whisk or stir to make sure they're well mixed.
- Now, slowly start stirring in the warm water, a little bit at a time. Keep mixing until you have a nice, thick, clay-like dough. You want it to hold its shape.
- If your mixture feels a bit too sticky (it happens!), just add a tiny bit more cornstarch, a teaspoon at a time, until it's just right – not too wet, not too dry.
- If you're adding color, this is the time! Mix in your natural coloring until the dough is evenly tinted. I love using mica powders for a subtle shimmer, but food coloring works great too for bolder hues.
- Now for the fun part: pressing! Gently press the dough into your silicone moulds. If you're using cookie cutters, roll out the dough on a clean surface to about 1/4 inch thick and press your shapes out.
- Smooth any rough edges with your fingers. This makes them look extra polished, almost like little pieces of art.
- Carefully pop the shaped stones out of their moulds (or lift them off your rolling surface) and place them onto parchment paper on a tray to dry.
- Now, patience is key! Let the stones air-dry completely. This usually takes about 24–48 hours. They should feel totally hard to the touch.
- To ensure they dry evenly on all sides, go ahead and flip them over halfway through the drying process.
- Once your aroma stones are bone dry and hard, it's time to add the scent! Drizzle about 3–5 drops of your chosen essential oil onto each stone.
- Give them a little time to soak up all that lovely fragrance – about 1–2 hours is perfect. Then, you can display them in your favorite spots!
Notes
Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. They'll retain their scent for quite a while, and when the scent starts to fade, you can simply add a few more drops of essential oil to refresh them. They can last for several months, sometimes even longer!
