Method
- Grab your clear container. Pour the 1 cup of water into it.
- Add the 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water. Stir until all the baking soda has dissolved. You want a nice clear solution.
- Sprinkle a handful of dry rice into the container. Try to spread it out so it’s not all clumped together.
- Carefully pour in the 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Watch what happens!
- As the vinegar hits the baking soda solution, a chemical reaction creates carbon dioxide gas. This gas attaches to the rice grains, making them float and then sink again as the bubbles pop.
- If the bubbling starts to slow down, sprinkle in a little more baking soda.
- To prolong the dancing show, add another splash of vinegar. Watch as the rice comes to life again! Keep adding small amounts of baking soda and vinegar to see the dance continue.
Notes
Colored Rice: Before adding the rice to the container, you can color it! Divide the dry rice into small bowls, add a few drops of food coloring to each, stir, and let it dry completely. Then use the colored rice in your experiment for a rainbow of dancing fun.
Glitter: A tiny pinch of biodegradable glitter can add a sparkly dimension to your dancing rice.
Different Grains: While rice is classic, you could experiment with other small grains like couscous to see if they "dance" differently.
