Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup butter room temperature, salted or unsalted
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • 0.33 cup powdered sugar confectioners' sugar
  • 0.125 tsp fine sea salt optional, if using unsalted butter
  • 0.25 tsp pure vanilla extract optional
  • citrus zest optional, finely grated orange or lemon
  • mini chocolate chips optional

Equipment

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Spoon or Spatula
  • airtight container
  • Hand Mixer (optional)

Method

  1. Step 1: Add room-temperature butter to a small mixing bowl. Ensure it is soft enough to press a finger into.
  2. Step 2: Pour the honey into the bowl with the butter. Mix together using a spoon, spatula, or hand mixer on low speed until completely combined and smooth.
  3. Step 3: Sprinkle in the apple pie spice and the powdered sugar.
  4. Step 4: Mix thoroughly until there are no streaks of sugar or spice and the butter is uniformly colored and smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure everything is incorporated.
  5. Step 5: Transfer the butter to an airtight container. Let it sit for at least 2 hours at room temperature to allow the flavors to meld. If your kitchen is very warm, you can rest it in the fridge.
  6. Step 6: Store in the airtight container. Can be kept at cool room temperature for 1-2 days or in the fridge for longer storage. Serve on toast, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, quick breads, scones, or cornbread.

Notes

Using room-temperature butter is essential for a smooth texture. Accurate measuring, especially of sugar and spice, is important. Don't skip the rest time for best flavor development. The butter will firm up when refrigerated; let it soften slightly before serving if desired. Lasts 2-3 weeks in the fridge.
