Method
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly.
- Step 3: Pour the spiced apple mixture into the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the water evenly over the apples, followed by the caramel sauce.
- Step 4: In a separate bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using your fingers or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Step 5: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the caramel-covered apples.
- Step 6: Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
- Step 7: Let the crisp cool for a few minutes before serving. It’s delicious served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For extra crunch, add ½ cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping. You can also substitute the caramel sauce with chocolate sauce or omit it entirely. For a dairy-free version, use a dairy-free butter alternative. Ensure oats are certified gluten-free if needed.
