Brighten Your Space: DIY Bioplastic Suncatchers

Imagine the gentle glow of sunlight streaming through a vibrant suncatcher, casting colorful patterns across your walls. This project isn't just about making something beautiful; it’s about creating a piece of art that brings joy and light into your home.

Ingredients

Materials You'll Need
  • 1 cup cornstarch This is the main ingredient that will give your suncatcher its structure.
  • 1 cup water Essential for mixing and activating the cornstarch.
  • 1 tbsp corn syrup Adds a touch of sweetness and helps with the texture.
  • Food coloring optional - Use this to add beautiful hues to your suncatcher.
  • Wax paper A perfect surface for pouring and drying your mixture.

Method

  1. Step 1: In a medium saucepan, combine the cornstarch, water, and corn syrup. Stir the mixture together until it's smooth and well combined.
  2. Step 2: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously as the mixture heats up. You'll see it start to thicken and become clear.
  3. Step 3: Once the mixture has thickened, remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool slightly. If you’d like to add color, now is the time!
  4. Step 4: Pour the colored mixture onto a sheet of wax paper. Use a spatula or spoon to spread it into your desired shape and thickness.
  5. Step 5: Allow the bioplastic to dry for 24-48 hours, until it is completely hardened.
  6. Step 6: Once dry, carefully peel the suncatcher off the wax paper and admire your handiwork!
  7. Step 7: Hang your bioplastic suncatcher in a sunny window and watch as the sunlight shines through.

Notes

To keep your suncatchers looking their best, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
