Prep Time 20 minutes
Total Time 4 hours
Course: Candy, Dessert

Ingredients

For the Sour Patch Kids
  • 1 cup fruit juice such as lemon, lime, raspberry, or orange
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 tbsp gelatin powder
  • 1/4 tsp citric acid
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Additional granulated sugar for coating

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Silicone Candy Mold
  • airtight container

Method

  1. Step 1: Start by combining the fruit juice, granulated sugar, and light corn syrup in a saucepan. Heat it over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. Step 2: Once everything is dissolved, remove the saucepan from heat and sprinkle the gelatin powder over the mixture. Stir until the gelatin is fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Step 3: Add the citric acid and salt to the mixture, stirring well to combine.
  4. Step 4: Pour the mixture into a silicone candy mold or a lined baking dish. Allow it to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for 4-6 hours or until fully set.
  5. Step 5: Once set, carefully remove the candy from the mold or dish and cut into your desired shapes or sizes.
  6. Step 6: In a small bowl, place additional granulated sugar. Toss the candies in the sugar until well coated.
  7. Step 7: Store your homemade sour patch kids in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Notes

Make sure to stir well to dissolve the sugar completely; otherwise, your candies might end up gritty. Use silicone molds for easy removal; they make the whole process so much smoother!
